Heart disease is the most common cause of death in Australia and globally.
But don’t get disheartened (pun intended). Heart disease is largely preventable, and you have the power to significantly reduce your risk of ever developing it.
Some studies suggest that a staggering 80% of heart disease can be prevented with the right diet and lifestyle changes.
Some risk factors like genetics, age, and gender, are out of our control. But risk factors that we can control include:
Smoking
Overweight & obesity
High blood pressure
High LDL-cholesterol/ApoB
Diabetes
Chronic stress
Poor diet and sedentary lifestyle
Managing these risk factors is key to a healthy heart.
The first step is awareness.
Do you know your fasting blood glucose? did you know that beyond being a risk for diabetes, it can also increase your risk of heart disease?
By raising awareness and testing these markers, we can be more proactive about our health and prevent many chronic diseases from ever developing.
Prevention is much more powerful than treatment.
Another thing to remember with heart disease is that it is a “silent killer”, it develops slowly over decades and may not have any noticeable symptoms early on.
So don’t wait for the symptoms! Even if you are in your 20s or 30s and feel invisible, this is the perfect time to assess your risk levels and address any factors early so you can significantly reduce your likelihood of having the disease later on in life.
